Poems - Trail Boss
| | Trail Bossby MoZark
Walkin’ his pony feeling dirty and mean
smell of horse on his saddle-worn jeans.
His ass was sore his teeth grindin’ dust
with five hundred cows left to his trust.
The cattle were settled three miles out of town
he came in alone for a quiet look around.
The salon was alive with whores and the like
the piano was playin’ “Sweet Sadie From Pike”.
Not much of a town just turnin’ the day
visions in dust, watchin’ life slip away.
The world went by and didn’t look back
leavin’ nothin’ of valve in a room shack.
He turned his pony and gave him his head
then slumped in the saddle, the drovers bed.
He’ll lie to his men say the town went bust
mine petered out laying stilled in it’s rust.
Unaccustomed to lying so he told the truth
town’s off limits while remembering his youth,
those greenhorn years his very first drive
fightin’ and lovin’ and lovein’ the ride.
Some of the men said they’re goin’ to town
Gauntlet’s dropped so-by challenged his ground.
“Boys he said, less you’re walkin’ three mile
them pony’s is mind, touched his colt and smiled”.
I was given the job of bossin’ this drive
so don’t try me boys and you’ll stay alive.
When the drive is over and we’re in for the dance
remember home; keep your poke in your pants.
Life seemed cheap, as it moved on west,
in search of land, gold, and who is the best.
But the cowboy rides, and the trail boss lives on
glorified in print, movies and song.

Thanks for the comment. I haven’t been around of late, my well has gone dry and it took most of the month to get county water. Then my PC went down and the water heater went out. I’m nice and clean now and back on the air. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack

G'day Jack...
Those droving days certainly must have been trying times for the head drover. Of course the movies are full of poetic licence aren't they.
Thank you Jack

Aw Jack, you really got into the rhythm and spirit of the drover's lifestyle in the old west. Loved finding this to read, absolutely enjoyable! Cheers, my friend - Mary Ann

I haven’t lived long enough to be any were near Mary Ann’s ability, well maybe I’ve lived long enough but I’d need another eighty-three years. I thank you any way for stretching the truth. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack
