Shouldn't I be dead by now?

'Shouldn't I be dead by now?' my friend plainly said.
Thinking of the valiant who had fallen.
Individually, in groups, in lines, in rows, 'that should be me.'
'Why isn't it I who have fallen?'

I replied that I think I also would have died.
Become one of the forgotten.
The rush of the charge of another push
My body lain, all forgotten.

Why are we so unhappy not to die,
unhappy to live in with contentment.
We are giant boys, you see,
who resent our life's contentment.
