Poems - The Critics in My Head
| | The Critics in My Headby Kieran
You're too stable and you know it
To be an artist or a poet
Would you cut off your ear
As a gift to a whore
With a syphillitic sore
Like Van Gogh did?
Would you sleep on the streets
Then flick your fleas
At the teaching priests
Like Rimbaud did?
No! You're too normal and you know it,
Much too tame to be a poet.
Would you get off brilliant plays
Between stretches in the pen
For pocket-picking
And tricking with old men
Like Jean Genet did?
Would you play the junkie on the run,
Kill your wife and keep the gun
Like William B. who proved to me
That crazy's underrated?
No! You're too sane to be a poet,
Too standard and you'll blow it.
Would you pull a tricky Dickinson
And keep your work in a little drawer
To be read some day but not before
The one you disappear?
Would you write in blood
Like the Marquis de Sade
Or pronounce the very death of God
Like Nietzsche, in the booby hatch
By the end of his career?
No! You're too nice to be a poet,
Way too friendly and you know it.
Would you disappear,
Go off the grid
Like Salinger and Pynchon did,
A steady stream of novels when
They're nowhere to be found?
Would you get behind some out-there cause
Like Ginsberg's NAMBLA-blah-blah-blahs
Or pin on several swastikas
Like an aging Ezra Pound?
Would you pull a fast j. t. leroy,
Pretend to be a teenaged boy,
Take credit as a prodigy,
Then in the end turn out to be
A Laura Albert hoaxer
On the brink of menopause?
No! Read it but don't write it
'Cause your love is unrequited.
You're too honest and you know it
To be an artist or a poet.

Can't tell you how much I love this! And I actually learned stuff too! And forgot that i must order that Rimbaud book from Amazon!
PS. Most crime shows (allegedly based on fact) have 'normal' people as the evil serial rapists and serial killers in the end.) Just my two cents!

Most people know Caravaggio was a painter and John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer. But fewer know John Wayne Gacy was also a painter and Caravaggio, also a murderer! The line may be thin. This poem came from the idea that, since the best art comes from some pretty tortured psyches, I couldn't succeed as a writer because I wasn't screwed up enough. lol. I still don't think I'm screwed up enough, but I'm working on it.

as the saying goes, truth is stranger than fiction...i believe that brilliance and insanity often go hand in hand. some of my favorite people are nutcases. terrific writing, christopher.
