Beautiful Useless Things

by Kieran

"One turns half away, musingly,
from certain beautiful useless things."

--Henry James

Arthur's a wiz with scissors
And a future fashion czar.
He'll open a salon one day,
Hairdresser to the stars...
Or maybe dance in a ballet
Or sculpt an angel's wings.
I tell him to go on and make
His beautiful useless things.

He wants to bury iris bulbs
In homely highway grass
And be the reason orchids bloom
Along the overpass,
Hang crinoline in every room
And fill his hands with rings.
I tell him to go on and make
His beautiful useless things.

I say "The names they're calling you--
That start with F, that start with Q--
Are all an empty head can do
To make an ugly world..."

Arthur is out windsurfing
Every day on summer break
'Cause it's kinetic poetry
An art for its own sake.
His friends grow up, run companies,
Balance ledgers, and chart trends,
Cut deals, and other useful things
On which the world depends.

He only cuts a graceful figure,
Only balances his board
Between a weltering horizon
And a sandy distant shore,
Between the fickle wind which flies him
And the hungry sea which calls.
He is useless, less than nothing.
Heaven help us when he falls.

I think all people are beautiful, they have no choice in their creation, but they create their destiny, not by how they look or what they say but simply because of who they are - love your poetry..Smile Phoebe

Well, you certainly get this poem! Thank you for a terrific compliment. Arthur in the poem is art (his nickname) itself, but also a boy making his own way on the path less travelled by.
