It is simple.
Blood pools in the lowest places,
fills cracks and dents.
It has no voice other than its drying,
its flake, its falling away.
Blood feels no pain.
Charles scratched his balls
and asked if I had plans for the day,
other than tending my child
and dressing my wounds
I suppose is what he meant.
I just continued to button my blouse
and ponder his frame.
Young men are a wonder of nature,
tight asses, muscled arms,
eager sex-craved eyes.
Charles was simple,
like blood.
If I was lucky
I'd shed him within the month,
grateful for one less mouth to feed.

holy jeebus, Doris, this is an exceptional poem. I love how frank it is, and so well crafted - the line and stanza breaks are perfect! It's also rewarding to see a longer piece from you. I love your small poems, but I always want more.

Just about the time my wife didn’t need those things any more I got cancer and had my prostrate removed. I guess there’s justice in the scheme of things after all. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack
