Autumn in the suburbs -
the days tumble and shrink.
Time you prepared for winter.

Something terrible happened:
we forgot how to prepare for winter.
At dusk, I walk past the terraces
at the bottom of the hill.
Behind glass and lace curtains,
the families sit hypnotized,
in the living-room light.

The man who lives in the house
on the crown of the hill,
gets home from work at half-past six,
parks in the fading light and goes in.

Thirty seconds later,
remembers he’s left the brake off.
Rushes out, too late:
It’s halfway down, nearly doing 40, getting faster.

quite a chilling poem. you set the scene very well.

    Thanks for commenting. I didn't realise this poem was chilling until you mentioned it, so it was great to get another perspective. You're right! Being nearly 40 is quite chilling...
