Traveler to Emmaus

by Kieran

A banquet's ready and a crown,
A throne upon a dais.
He shambles up and glances down.
A visit might he pay us?
On whirlwind tour of desert towns,
This traveler to Emmaus.

He's writhing in his chyrsalis,
Pressing through his husk,
Light by light more luminous
Like Reno after dusk,
His acolytes too numerous
To stop, break bread with us.

And yet he does. And for a while
His words are wise and clear.
He rolls his eyes and gives a smile
At horns we cannot hear,
And when he dazzles, turns a dial,
Then laughs and draws us near.

But then a comment kettle-fries
In static between stations,
And whistles weave through his replies,
And still his luster amplifies,
Ample proof that Paradise
Is running out of patience,

Scared how well the Son pretends
To be one of our kind,
Worried even fickle friends
Prove hard to leave behind.
Inaudible as evening ends
And bright enough to blind,

He says with love how much he hates
To leave but leaves the same.
His Father's pacing at the Gates,
And Moses calls his name.
A chariot, double-parked, awaits
Him down the road in flame.
