Rapture

by fogglethorpe

Salvation is wind
in the feathers
that stole me
away;

now gravity's sin-
ewy tethers
are holding
no sway.

    Thanks D. The form is rimas dissolutas, which grants the writer a lot of latitude.

I love this form (what is the name for it)? - so well done - you have so few syllables to work with and have captured a brilliant thought perfectly.

    Hi Sandy..thanks. It is a rimas dissolutas, but the descending syllable count is something that just came naturally.

I have a bias against very short poems I'm still combatting. This poem, which I like a good deal, may help me do it! It's a great example how the rules of form can enhance a piece. A lot of meaning is packed into 18 words. For example the line break sin-/ewy suggests the break from gravity's hold. "Feathers" and "tethers" bring animals subliminally into each stanza: birds and horses with their implication of lightness and heft. The poem is a small gem with many subtle facets! Bravo!

    Thanks for that. And you are right on about "sin/ewy"..also, the first half of the word is "sin" and that bolsters the metaphor of gravity as the nearly uncontrollable fallibility of our earthly lives.

The play on 'sin' is cleverly done here.
