Fukushima and The North Pacific Garbage Patch

by KilgoreTrout

Today, amongst the fuss
of news,
came word
of The North Pacific Garbage Patch.

The Garbage Patch
is in the ocean:
a swirling mass of trash
bigger than America.

From the ferry,
clattering and fuming
across the Huangpu river
you can see bottles,

packets, old rope,
and tyres
bobbing out to the colder waters
of the Garbage Patch.

More news:
a football from Fukushima
washed up on the shores
of Alaska.

They traced the owner:
his family lost everything.
The boy poses awkwardly in a photo,
with the ball .

The garbage patch swirls
They say most of the debris
will end up there, eventually.

Maybe we’ll all drown
in plastic tat.
In China, where the factories are,
a billion lucky plastic cats
smiling, paws waving,
set sail on the glittering sunset waves,
bound for the garbage patch.

The patch swirls relentlessly,
waiting for our bones.

Thanks for reading Alana. It is sad to find out there's now a garbage patch the size of the US floating in the Pacific. Don't feel left out if you live by the Atlantic - there's one there too. Guess I'll think twice before buying more junk in the future.
