Hot Springs Home

by rondo

Hot Springs Home

On the north side of Coachella valley
Lay my “Desert Hot Springs” home
Southeast side of Cali.
Where few crops are grown

The lowest part of Mojave desert
Near the Salton Sea
The only town north of the tracks
Is my community

On the south side lives the “rich and famous”
Clean pristine and seemingly blameless
Palm Desert with “El Paseo Drive”
And Palm Springs where the wealthy thrive
Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells
Where elite retreat and the “who’s of who” dwell

But North side is a common folk town
Where the cars are a little older
And the skins a little more brown

Where crime per capita is slightly higher
And less amenity to meet ones desire
But it has its draw with lots of features
With a little less law comes more freedom for desert creatures

Less civilized perhaps
But along with that comes less bad raps
Like oppressive zoning codes
Or no parking meters on the streets and roads

On a fault line
Hence the hot springs name
With both hot and cold aquifers
With purity the same
The Colorado river seeps the San Andreas fault
And is purified by a hundred miles of rock and sand and salt

The people of the hot springs are a humble lot for sure
With an entire earth diversity few of them are pure
Most of them in service of the rich across the tracks
Where they work and serve conservatives
But return as democrats

The salt of the earth and humble people
Where some are bad but less are evil

On one side one might rob a home
To cloth or feed his family
On the other some mother
Might overcharge thousands
To buy himself a Hum bee

With castles on the one side
And casa’s on the other
They are neighbors in the country clubs
But in our hood were more like brothers

One is bad the others worse
Where do you fit in this poetic verse

Ah, I could see it and feel it like I was there, brother... I could feel the warmth rising from front yards without sprinkler systems and the freedom of the less restrictive lifestyle seems far more appealing to me. Oh-la to the beautiful people. Cheers, Mary Ann

G'day Ronald...
i'm sure the geography in your poem fits society in general.
At times it appears that the drive to survive is a crime within because when hunger strikes, the devil leads...but those with plenty haven't worked out yet, that donating food will save them more than they realize.
Thanks Ronald

Nicely turned phrases. We all try to fit into compatible surroundings, it’s just human nature. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack
