Tolerance

Tolerance

Even rednecks have to be tolerant
When it comes to their buddies foibles and quirks
Who would listen to their cross-burning stories?
If they were always assholes and jerks

Tolerance is the key to civilization
We learn to accept what we perceive as inept
Tho we believe we have justification
In the prejudice, bias and bigotry we’ve kept

As it is there’s the same exact percentage
Of bad/ugly people in every race
When economics are equal there is no better vintage
And superiority is a logic misplaced

Intolerance of status is a whole other matter
The perception that those with more are better
Completely untrue and wholly wrong
An ignorant view that’ has gone on too long
That one might not want to be gaudy or gauche
Or fall into the trap of got to have most

Tolerance of choices and tolerance of faith
Allows growth for not one but the whole human race
Tolerance is wisdom and tolerance is love
Whether grown in your own heart or born from above

Let not semantics or trifles misguide
When hate is granted truth is denied

It's a good poem, Ron - I would just say, though, that I don't like the word "tolerance", because for me it has the connotation of "putting up with" (e.g. if I said "I tolerate you, Ron", you'd probably feel hurt). "Acceptance" is perhaps a better word, though still not perfect.
