Patriotism

by AsIf

A dollar store flag made in China
A jingoist country cd
An address in South Carolina
Ain't patriotism to me

It isn't your team's winning outcome
The size of the dogs on your grill
The number of guests you will welcome
Or all of the beer you can swill

And it's neither dovish nor hawkish
It isn't a liberal screed
It isn't conservative talkish
'Cause patriotism is deed

Don't jazz up the Star Spangled Banner
Adopt a dumb slogan to blurt
Or posture in some vulgar manner
Or wear an Old Glory tee shirt

It always transcends superficial
The cost, it can be rather steep
In short, it is love, sacrificial
No, patriotism ain't cheap

Amen...this rings true with Memorial Day and Independence Day almost upon us

I love that your "rants" always seem to have an "upbeat" rythym to them

Very well written. Personally I agree with Mark Twain (I think it was) who said that patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels. But if you understand patriotism as something different from what most people mean, as you seem to do here, then you've got the point as expressed in your last stanza here.

Thank you Ozymandias. You are correct. I understand patriotism to be sacrificial love for one's country. In America, it is a word that is often used carelessly.

Aloha JH...
As I perused your posts this mourn... I, at first thought... aaaaah... the other side of that coin... US-v-them type of thought... then I stopped here... I have found that diatribe tends to produce two truths... that which is winded and spat out in fear... and that which is of one's personal truth... your closing in this effort is... your personal truth... after all of your words against others, struggling to find theirs... you express yours here...

"It always transcends superficial
The cost, it can be rather steep
In short, it is love, sacrificial
No, patriotism ain't cheap"

This is the reality that each of US must face... Patriotism is not cheap... so wtf is up with the meo-conned, tea bagging, round eyed devils who call themselves patriots? "They", want their country back! The first four stanzas of this anthem expose the hypocritical
of extent of the truth of their mindset... that these mindsets are supporting the power of the neo-conned, by the meo-conned, for the want to be aristocratic, profit mongering, progeny of capitalistic scum that have for decades plotted to take and take and take... without thought of this Patriotism which you finally bleed out to US as your truth... yea, a bit long winded on my part...

a deeper observation perhaps of the last and more profound thoughts you express... call me an ass-uming observer of words... but, check this...

"...always... superficial
cost... steep
short... sacrificial
No... cheap."

reads like that bonehead boehners cv...

Thank you JH for the pins from your words that allowed me to puke out this reply... you do have a clue... just roll with your truth and all will be revealed... all of the best from this life, to you, and all of your relations... Michael
