the elephant in the room

by Ozymandias

towards the tentative
leanings of old men
into evenings of yellow smoke

there came an elephant
sauntering down the pavement
hands in his pockets
a cheroot in his mouth

entering the room
he broke wind noisily
to disrupt their rumblings

and immediately

there was a clattering of plates
and a scattering of geriatrics

after which the elephant
took his place at the table
adjusted his tuxedo
and enjoyed rich pickings

rubbing his tummy
laughing

Very cool lay-out. "And immediately" is like the poem's sun, separating ideas vertically and horizontally. The pachyderm in question is probably death, and the elderly here, his "rich pickings!" So this is dark poem with a cold protagonist delivered with jaunty wit and creative moxie. What a sweet contrast! It's not too much to say this piece is brilliant! The stanzas swerve as if the avoid the intrusion of mortality.

I appreciate the detailed commentary. I must say, however, that the elephant is not death, at least not in my intention, though I acknowledge the right of the reader to use his own interpretation. Do you know the phrase "the elephant in the room" for something that disrupts the ordinary comfortable routine of life? That's what I had in mind.

Now you know how I feel. Can't help it, it is kill myself or live with the noise; I chose the later and everybody else be damned. Pass the beans and chicken.

G'day Rory...
You filled the page (room) nicely with your poem Rory. Yes, that elephant certainly stands out alright, but of course the comments aren't favourable.
We've all met this bloke Rory.
Thanks mate

Rory! I thoroughly enjoyed this one...for the meaning...the imagery...and the unique structure! Very Happy I really loved it..and it made me smile. I and others in my family have shied away from that same elephant MANY times. Even though we leave him to himself in any room he appears...he NEVER takes the hint to take a permanant hike! Of course,...then again, why would he? He just takes over and as you say....he gains much fodder each time he returns and grows larger each time...until...one day...he will fill the room so completely, that no one will escape the room without getting crushed in some way. Anyway...I DO hate that coarse glutton of an elephant. GREAT work.

I'm surprised this one is so popular. It got hardly any comments in the forums. And I would have thought it was a bit too "modern" for most people. Shows how much I know, eh?

Really enjoyed this, Ozzyman. I read 1984 again the other day, and there's a weird and strangly similar feeling I get from reading that book and your poem. Well done, mate.

It's interesting the way different people see things. I had no thought at all for the Orwell novel as I was writing this. But good for you if you see some connection there!

I married in 1984.... you never know, I guess Wink
