Trends

by Phoebe

There is no doubt the USA is an exciting place
Big and busy, lots of living filling every space
A global misconception as the land of milk and honey
A global reputation as the place to make big money

Everything that is anything comes from the USA
Its become the role model, the one that leads the way
Nothing shows this clearer than to watch the young today
The way they dress, their music and in everything they say

The future of our planet is dependant on our youth
All indicators at the moment show a basic truth
And if the current trends are to continue in this vein
The long term outcomes indicate there'll be more loss than gain

Global trends impact on lives and play some major roles
In influencing future progress toward long term goals
However it's the quality of every trend that's set
That confirms the philosophy that what you give you get

But really, at the end of day we all must draw a line
And own the fact the future of our world is yours and mine
Unfortunately, we can just to our young ones, give our views
We know the trend, that in the end, they'll be the ones to choose!.

" there is nothing so sad as an english man in a baseball cap " - the libertines.

it's the diversity of cultures that make the world interesting. it's the homogenization of every thing being reduced to a simple cultutal level and being told " this is right " and " this is wrong " by the media that is the problem.

maybe the rest of the world doesn't want to watch films about camp vampires just because they are made in the USA. i prefere a new zealand film myself - " once were warriors " - paora and cultural hound.

The issue most Maori people had with the Once Were Warriors film was the fear it would show the world a false picture of Maori. What it really was about was relationships and poverty - and the results of a global reality. The fear was well founded. Sometimes, even in acting I think we do things too well! Rolling Eyes Thank you Paora Smile Feebs

what i got from " once were warriors " ( everybody should watch that movie by the way ) was that it was the westernising of the maori people that created the monster that the man became. every part of his heritage was taken from him by drink and so called " society ".

" took a little look around to see which way the wind blows " - L.A. woman - the doors.

      - thanks whipi - paora and haka hound.

The USA to the youth of NZ is a fascinating and exciting place to be and is especially embraced by Maori youth. Their obsession with the black culture in terms of the hard rap/hip hop music, clothes and gangsta appeal is a worry. Having descended from a long line of chiefs one would think it would be with great pride they might recognise their heritage but colonisation has contributed to more than the loss of land - it has created a lost culture. Can they relearn what it is to be Maori? With the growth ( hard fought for I might add) of language nests the health of the language is looking very good but there is a long way to go. Your descriptive comment on USA society is very harsh - it's fault lies in its size, to be fair most countries are mini versions of that. Smile Smile

G'day Phoebe...
Same here Phoebe. I just hope that we can be educated on the indigenous cultures before they are lost. Ignorance and lack of education for these cultures has caused so much heartache through lack of understanding. Education does mean both ways.
Thank you Phoebe for this great social poem

Education is the key Lindsay, sadly in many instances there has to be uneducation before education - some cultures need to know they actually have one before the one that tried to change that fact... however, where there's life and great minds thinking alike, there's always hope..Smile Phoebe
