Obesity Epidemic

Obesity Epidemic

Monga…eat…fill your plate
That sauce is so good! Isn’t that gravy great?
Try some pie, have a slice of cake
A between meal snack or when you’re up at night late

Soda pop bottles, liters and cans
Even when it isn’t hot you have a cold one in your hand
Chips and crackers
We are the consummate snackers

Candy is dandy liquor makes you thicker
A six pack a day will make a belly bulge quicker
More caloric intake and less activity
Makes your thighs inflate and your butt sag with gravity

Kit Kat, Milky Way, Three Musketeers, Mounds
Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos all add the pounds
Couch potato sportsman and armchair quarterbacks
When movement is less important there’s more heart attacks

Fat babies with Diabetes because momma won’t say no
Parental intervention is a place that pops won’t go
With glycemic scales like that of whales there is no real excuse
They start out life with deficits a form of child abuse

In the land of milk and honey it seems discipline is what we lack
Sugar is the powder killer replacing cocaine and crack
Love handles, insulation, muscle at rest
Big boned, extra cushion and more to love is best

We live the lap of luxury with lives of ease and leisure
Unless we die of heart attack or respiratory seizure

The poem itself and the flow of words is very good. Only thing is I find it a bit priggish. Apart from, that very good poem.

rondo, an excellent write with an super strong message delivered with your usual no-nonsense approach. You have nailed it - and just as so many are eating badly, constantly snacking on empty calories and the killer sugar - it's adding yet another nail to their coffins.

An absolutely wonderful social write my buddy...nothing priggish about bringing piggish to those who WILL NOT see!!!......"Obesity is generally viewed as a failure of personal resolve, with no acknowledgement of the genuine conspiracy in this historical scheme. People actually did sit in strategy meetings discussing ways to get all those surplus calories into people who neither needed nor wished to consume them.Whether or not they understand the biology, food marketers know the weakness and have exploited it without mercy. Children have been targeted especially; food companies spend over $10 billion a year selling food brands to kids, and it isn't broccoli they're pushing. Overweight children are a demographic in many ways similar to minors addicted to cigarettes, with one notable exception: their parents are usually their suppliers. We all subsidize the cheap calories with our tax dollars, the strategists make fortunes, and the overweight consumers get blamed for the violation. The perfect crime.”

I'm curious as to how you managed to view This Way of Life but I'm very pleased you did. What it basically highlights is the love our people have for their cultural roots which are deeply embedded in the land. In the 60's and 70's there was a huge urban drift to look for work and a couple of generations were born in the cities but the land that connects them is in their blood and many have now gone home and live in anything they can just to be on their land which use to be ALL of NZ...now there are just a few acres here and there but it is still in Maori ownership. I hope you enjoyed the story as well as the scenery..xoxoxo
