been there-done that

been there-done that

some who are otherwise wise
say "you will come back again"
back to life afer one dies
to kama-lize every sin

return to a lesser state
than the one you lived before
possibly come back as bait
in a store beside the shore

you could work your way back up
but what could that cockroach do,
crawling up and down your cup,
to earn cock-a-doodle-doo?

but how it is with people
is that we do not revert-
paid our dues under steeple
or maybe didn't convert

evidence shows in the fate
of our strange ontogeny
that will recapitulate
in each one's phylogeny

a scientific treatise
describes fish-like gills and snout
of our young growing fetus
that traces mankind's route

we don't become a critter
we have already been there
and now we're a cloud-sitter
treading where angels don't dare
