Poems - Grass and grandmothers
| | Grass and grandmothersby Ozymandias
Where the tombstones rise
the ground is given over
to grass and grandmothers -
there's a give and take,
an osmosis of old times,
the prayers of old women
and the wind singing through grass.
Think of it, you old men who rest at last -
in your lives it was never like this.
The young ones would always come
to crop down your foolishness,
straighten your waistcoats,
ensure your respectability
in the midst of your unkempt decay.
Now they pass over
the surface of the earth -
but grass and grandmothers
know how to touch you.

oh i love this. especially that third stanza! this reminds me of watching the old women pay their respects to their war hero husbands on Memorial Day here...there's a special kind of beauty in sadness that is awe-inspiring and fearful at the same time.

Thanks Chris - that Memorial Day image would be an apt one for this poem, I'm sure.

Thanks very much. The title came to me first, and I worked on a poem to fit it.

I love the first two stanzas, especially the line "an osmosis of old times". The third stanza is missing something for me, maybe it has to do with it being longer than the rest.

G'day Rory...
Your poem had me reflecting back to when I was a child and taken to cemetries with my parents. They were not looked after like today, in fact unkept amongst the headstones.
Thanks again Rory on a fine poem.

Yes, no problem. I noted you when you told me to write a poem about my mom's religion: I sent you a message. I figured you read it on your phone but didn't have much time to answer it. No problem, it just feels pointless that I send it because it was an hours-worth of words. Please don't take offense: I'm just reminding you, because I worked very hard at it. I guess if you don't want to respond, don't sweat it. After all, I am not your authority, and I can't tell anybody what they can or cannot respond to. If you ever do want to respond to it, though, and you happen to come by a day that will offer you plenty of writing time for the PM--that would be suitable to my interests. If you are still interested in me writing about your suggestion, I will.

Give me a break, willya? I have been so flat out at work, closing down my business, that I barely have time to breathe at the moment. I saw your PM but did not get around to reading it. I will respond this weekend.
