The Test of Manhood

The Test of Manhood

The test of manhood used to be to hunt enough food for the table
Tracking senses had to be good a steady aim and body able
But with the advent of calls and scents, binoculars and scopes
Killing game is not the same accessible to the lame and dopes

Another test of manhood used to be serve in the military
But with a budget so immense as ours is for defense
Today’s conflicts are not that scary

So what has the test for manhood come down to
Is it to drink more than your buddies can do
Is it to make love to the most women
That would seem anatomically given
What about to father a child
That too seems accomplishment mild

In truth there are a lot of ways to become a man
But not the kind you would readily understand

Like standing up to gangs and make your home front safe
Instead of let them have their way and neighborhoods go waste
Or to step up and be a kind of father figure to kids that aren’t your own
And fill the void that might be missing in a broken home

Being a man means paying child support
They didn’t ask to come into this world
For the next 20 years they will need your help
She shouldn’t have to do it all by herself

A real man takes care of his spawn
Even if his place in the household is gone

A man in society is the laws helping hand
A man in nature looks out for the land
A man in politics is a fair policy decider
A man with children is essential provider

This is seriously a man's poem but I can read in it where he fits into the happy families big picture - if that's what he/she/they want it to be. The reality of any kind of permanency around choices people make in terms of their personal responsibilities is ad hoc at best but it's not exclusive to the male of the species..it's about partnerships. It takes minimum two all the way down the line to create any given situation in terms of that personal responsibility. It's the defining of those responsibilities that determine the outcomes I guess....xoxoxo
