The ballad of the highwaymen

by Essex68

Night was a howling whisper, as it rolled the pitch black trees
And the moon was a ghostly spectre, with trails of silver fleece
Awaiting high o’er yonder was a horseman dressed in black
A row of pistols at his side and a musket on his back

For three nights he had waited, upon this cobbled road
To hear four horses coming with a carriage full of gold
By the forest there he waited, as the moonlight caught his breath
And he heard the distant clatter that raised thunder to his breast

The carriage it was coming with its lamplight shining bright
Sixteen hooves upon the stone shattered the windswept night
He turned his horse into the wind, and drew two pistols primed
And stood midway the highway, and let out his famous cry

“Stand there and deliver, if you wish to see another day, I’ll
take King George’s gold this night then I will be on my way”
The coachman stood and raised his hands, fear quivered in his eye
And the pitch black eyes that carved his soul he could not dare defy

The highwayman did beckon, all the coachmen to dismount
And open up this carriage of gold, so he could take account
“Now fill these bags right to the brim; then I can ride away
there is no need to spill your blood, there is no need to pray”

The moon was a ghostly spectre the trees now whispered death
A red coat troop were waiting, with loaded muskets to their chests
They broke cover in the moonlight, their trap would now be sprung
This highwayman would meet his fate before the rising sun

They presented him an offer, to drop his pistols to the ground
But the thought of hemp about his neck and death without a sound
Reeled inside his pounding heart, and his soul it felt no fear
As he turned his pistols to the troops his fate was true and clear

When night is a ghostly whisper blowing tales through the trees
The same moon shines down on the road, a ghost rider you may see
With a row of pistols at his side, upon a horse of velvet black
A tricorn hat that’s brimmed with gold he awaits the next attack

He stands midway the highway, “Yes” midway the murder highway
He stands midway the highway, with the Kings troop at his back

Thank you Linda, It can be hard to write longer pieces, I have trouble as well. I always find it best to make sure you have a good story in your head to start with

G'day Wayne...
If you didn't hang these blokes in England, they were sent in chains to good old Aus where they taught their trade to our infamous bushrangers. I really enjoyed your ballad Wayne.
Thanks mate
