When Her Love Came Riding Home

They tell stories as they sit and rock
on the front porch of the old farmhouse
about the days when cattle ranchers
ruled the land and cattle drives
were wild and dangerous and
just a way of life for most.

They tell stories as the sit and rock
on the front porch of the old farmhouse
of how the women stayed home and
tended the children, cooked for all
the ranch hands as well as their men
worked their fingers to the bone.

They tell stories as they sit and rock
on the front porch of the old farmhouse
of how at the end of the drive when
their men would return home tired
dirty and sweaty and wanting a hot bath
a hot meal and their woman's love.

They tell stories as they sit and rock
on the front porch of the old farmhouse
grandma and grandpa about the
good old days when grandma would
wait and watch for grandpa to return to her
when her love came riding home.
