Poems - half-breed
| | half-breedby Rabbitt
half-breed
there used to be a law against it
feared more than consanguinuity
and a few would take a chance at it
jeopardize their perpetuity
they might beat you and take all your gold
but if you were lucky and survived
the neighbors around you would be cold
and you'd end up wishing you had died
I wonder when it became OK
to see whoever you wished to see
though you look different as night and day
and let it go where it wants to be
always proud to have Indian blood
a few feathers in my family tree
no one has ever thrown any mud
on my Mother's Mother's ancestry
our Princess had a poem written
in a small town history of Maine
that described how her tribe was smitten
by a band of settlers who came
So I paid for a DNA test
to be sure that it all was true,
that I am different from the rest-
but went from moccasin to shoe
the happy haplogroup that I share
is with half of Europe, even more
so I guess I end up being square
I'm not an Indian anymore
how would this kind of story begin
and will the real truth ever be known?
did she take an English baby in
and lovingly raise it as her own?
yes, I guess it made me stand so proud
my ancient Indian blood and all
but now I'm one of a larger crowd
with a new reason for standing tall
I'm not just part of one tribal troop
I'm united with all humanity
and I'm hoping that my worldwide group
will become peaceful, happy, and free

I am assuming you thought you were Indian and then you found out you were not, but the fact that an Indian took you in you became part of all nations? Could you please inform if I am right or wrong. I love this poem. It is going in my favorites

Thank you, NahilaCsema. I am proud to be an Indian. This means that I am part of a large, interesting group of people who have been on this continent for at least twelve thousand years. Although my DNA doesn't confirm my Indian blood, it doesn't deny it either. My DNA haplogroup is H and, so far all American Indians are either A, B, C, D, or X. However, two Cheroke's were tested with H but maybe they have a European ancestor they don't know of. If more Native Americans are discovered with H, it would tend to confirm an Indian ancestory for me. Over half the people in Europe are H but a small percentage of Asians are also H. If Indians are of Asian heritage, maybe some H will turn up in this country. I think it could also have happened that my great, great, great grandmother was brought up Indian from child birth and assumed she was Indian. My feeling more like a part of humanity is based on whatever Indian connection I have plus a wide connection with all people with the H haplogroup. Best to you. Bob
