Appalachian Love

APPALACHIAN LOVE

We are not like the Kennedy’s our blood is not blue.
Our home was Appalachia where our dreams never came true.
We immigrated north to an Ohio land.
Fatherless; a mother with eight children; an Appalachian accent; we understood racism, for we were the white-black children shipped across the river to the educated white man’s land.

Though we never had to fight for freedom or the right to vote, we fought for family integrity, which sometimes felt like bailing water from a sinking boat.
We cried tears of pain almost every night.
Wondering why we were born into this poor family Appalachian way of life.

Now we are older and we see the truth.
We were born into an Appalachian love that has seen all eight of us through.
As we think back to the trials and tribulations we all had to overcome. We are proud to be the children of two parents who were in love from the Appalachians
