Return of the workhouse.

by royst

I’ve seen the future and it’s not very nice
Where the only things that matter are a sale and a price
Humans – part of the machine, packing cans in trays
The same repetitive mindless job, lasting for days.
I’ve seen the future and it’s not very bright
Unfairness rules, workers forced to work nights
You could blame the government; it’s not just them
It’s perhaps ‘globalisation’ we should condemn.
The global economy is driven by competition
Nations fight to survive
For another edition of inward investment
Or jobs go abroad
But today nothing is assured.
I’ve seen the future, it reminds me of the past
Lots of conveyor belts and pressure to work fast
Reminds me of Henry Ford’s works revolution
Add temp jobs and low pay and lots of pollution.
The return of the workhouse, no welfare
In free market Britain, no need to care
Privatised place men – where quangos run riot
Sly men in suits making money on the quiet.
I’ve seen the future and machines are taking over
We’re more interested in space – the sight of a supernova
Than in our reality and the problems we face
The return of the workhouse
That cold and desperate place.

Written in 1996... but relevant today.

Aloha RW...
"add temp jobs and low pay and lots of pollution"... the neo-conned promotion... What Alexander Hamilton meant when he wrote, "that democracy will never work... because the people are beasts..." The 'Crown'... will rise again! This is a snide towards those one- percenters who seek aristocracy through the holding of currency... I will search for your updates to these decades old thoughts... Here is some gp currency for your till... all of the best from this life to you and all of your relations... Michael.
