Poems - IT'S THE NIGHTS
| | IT'S THE NIGHTSby mercymercy
It's the nights
It's the nights
It's the nights
That push me to the very
edge of absolute insanity
Is it the medications or the
diseases harnessed to those medications
that send me there
incessantly
The little bubbles float upward
popping and revealing
memories
long-hidden and waved into
those brain caverns I've had no time
to research or review
fondly or not
for eons
But I do smile with surprise
on occasion
Aunt Ella's beautiful red hair
and ever-fragrant kitchen
A little Fox Terrier - Penny -
my parents' child before
my arrival
Camping in Colorado
and Daddy's lists of necessities
made in March for
trips financed by the annual
tax refund and taken
in July during my birthday
The fleeting scent of my gentle grandfather's
Wrigley's Double-mint chewing gum
Other bubbles torment with
Glances of stitches on my shin
leftovers from
that 1966 fall in icy December
climbing a forbidden Kansas
rock wall
Or the never-ending nomad life
of an oil-field Father with its
terror of always being
the new kid
And the monster next door
who thought
nothing of stealing a
little girl's innocence
And I pray
And I gasp
And I clutch at
empty spaces of air
until finally
I wake in tears
I wake in fear
panic-stricken
and searching for the former
and confident
Me
Disturbing a home sleeping
strangely peacefully until shaken
by my piteous pleas
begging forgiveness
of them all
for the illnesses and
medications
that now push us all to the very
edge of absolute insanity

oh gosh, i certainly know those nights! i have restless leg syndrome that stems from my fibromyalgia and there are times when sleep is so fleeting (or conversely, too heavy) that i can't tell dreams from reality and memories wash over me that i don't really care to remember...you captured it beautifully here! so good to see you posting again, hope all is well. take care, Susan.

How odd it is the number of we who compose poetry have such illnesses... Or is it not so odd at all? Yes, fibromyalgia is one my enemies as well as is Rhuematoid, chronic anemia, Major Clinical Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and, of course, the loss of my right keg 18 months ago. And so often the meds are almost worse than the diseases...! And who wouldn't be depressed and anxious with all that with which to cope? But, writing helps and I continue to believe I must have a purpose still and God is an awesome God. Thank you for reading and commenting in my work - it is good to be back among GP friends!

You have etched despair upon a trembling page to create a poem of potency. Fond Regards. Mark.

Truly enjoyed this thoughtful stream of memories, many much like my own. "Always the new kid" - I suspect we both became very, very good at being whoever and whatever and wherever we were. Well done, Mercymercy... thanks for sharing your dreams, Mary Ann

Mary Ann - thank you for reading and commenting on my work. We "new kids" know what that's like... Never easy. I plan to catch up on reading your work - it's been too long since I've been here.

Certainly can relate to the past of things that memories and dreams may bring. The bed sores have healed and yet when I look in the mirror; it is then I remember the pain like it was painted on a white canvas for a reminder of how far I came.
Again glad to see you back. BWP... James...

Good to see you back again Susan. This is a good piece with very effective use of abruptly broken lines.

I feel the misery embodied in this poem. Incredibly sad. It must have been a tough write for you, and I admire your courage.
