The sound of the A38.

by royst

Early in the morning
Still in bed, while I’m yawning
I listen to the sound of the A38.
Believe it or not it’s quite peaceful
A constant flow of traffic
Like the rhythmic poem from a beatnik
Or the breathing of a bed mate.
Something rousing in the distance
Normally begins at 6am, stays busy till late afternoon.
It’s a concrete existence
But more that just a motorway
It’s hypnotic on a quiet day
And has a life of its own.

Took me back to me working days when the sound of tires on wet pavement meant a day off. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack

Urban peoples create their own comforts! I fall to sleep easier by the noise of the highway than the chirping of birds! Great write!

I have always felt the same way about railroads. Like highways, the come from somewhere and go somewhere. There is a kind of endearing quality, even a romantic flavor, to all the stories there must be behind that quiet, distant hum. The poem sums all that up nicely.
