When I was depressed

by Essex68

I have a gut feeling in my head, that’s affecting my heart
The night it never seems to end, the days they rarely start
Is there a magic potion that can sweep the blues away?
Or keep the weather of the mind from leading me astray?

This is my house, this is my room and in this bed I’ll stay
And shut the blinds and lock the door and have a duvet day
While in the darkness I can think about an escape plan
As the hints of sunshine creep my walls, I curse the weatherman

Nobody seems to understand; they say “Pull yourself together”
God I try but it’s all too much; I’m a victim of my own weather
Sometimes outside the sky is lead, but the sun shines in my heart
And other days when summer calls I don’t know where to start

So lock me up, keep me away from all you happy souls
It’s to painful to stay awake and the curtain rails old
The water heaters up the creak I’m not laying in a cold bath
And those old fashioned razor blades went out with Noah’s ark

You know I can’t swallow big pills, and I haven’t got a gun
And railway tracks and high cliff tops lead to messy scum
But you know I can’t be selfish, no one clears up after me
Maybe I’ll just disappear, and leave some poetry

W R Baker

I wrote this many years ago when I was going through a bout of depression. I changed the title to something a little more positive.

Very well. Glad your feeling better. Depression sucks but I like this poem. Give it a 10, and take care.

I had those days I talked to my gun telling it not to think about it. I don't know why gun think about things like that. In America I have a concealed weapons permit, so if I ever decide to kill myself and pull the trigger; I well be sure to leave a note explaining it was self-defense in order to get away with it.

It is nice at times to go back and edit old writes and bring them up to date. Well done. BWP. The cure for my depression is poetry.

Have a nice day Wayne...

I know what you mean James, Poetry is better than any prescription drug. And it's all free.

Wayne, this is a fantastic yarn! I thought that it was written by an Australian, and then I see your name! You can really write these well! I am impressed. Take care, Gail

Oh, this poem is so well written and truly indicative of the struggles many of us have with ourselves, the weather, even getting anything done. I don't think you left a single bit out - and that last stanza nicely sums it up! Thanks, and I'm so glad it's now an "oldie" for you...
Best wishes, Mary Ann

G'day Wayne...
Brutally honest mate, and I'm sure anyone who suffers from the scourge of depression will know exactly the lines you have written here.
Well done.
