Poems - Hop-scotch
| | Hop-scotchby MoZark
Chalk marks on the sidewalk
Soon to wash away
We were little grownups
Waiting for our day
We never knew the time
Never closed the gate
Always in a rush
Then manage to be late
We weren’t growing old
It wasn’t in the plan
Always one more day
We never watched the sand
Now the caulk has faded
Or my eyes are weak
Hop has gone with scotch
Along with hide and seek
Playing jacks with grandson
With arthritic hands
I giggle at the past…
This is how it all began.

always dreamed of a house with it's floor having hopscotch painted, so i wouldn't have to draw it every time....didn't realize, by the time i designed my house, life had taught me new games and new rules..
"We weren’t growing old
It wasn’t in the plan.."
a beautifully written poem!
warmest wishes,
D.

Oh, fond memories of being light on our feet, pastel colored chalk and little shiny do-dads we threw to mark our place... Wonderful piece of nostalgia, Jack. Cheers, Mary Ann

Up until I was ten years old I lived it the city where there were sidewalks that’s where I saw the girls play hopscotch; of cores the boys did every thing to disrupt their play.
Thanks Mary Ann. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack

You must have had a great Dad. The only game my Dad and I played was called, sprint, I ran like hell when he got home. Thanks much Bonnie Have a grand tomorrow…Jack

Trading in the hops for scotch? Be careful man. I like the poem. It is well written.

G'day Jack...
Nice and simply written Jack, and it takes me back a long way when we played hop scotch against the girls. Of course we always let the girls win.
Thanks mate

The game is traced back to 1635-1672 then was know as Scotch-hopper. It’s played today with little change in its original form. Thanks Lindsay. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack

This is a fine poem indeed. So nicely said. I like the metaphors too, and the truth expressed about human expectations. Nice poem, a ten and a fave too. Warm Wishes, Tasha

Thanks for digging this out. It felt odd, like reading someone else’s words, and I do thank you for your comment.
