Poems - too much this and that

too much this and that

too much this and that

too much sweetness and light cloys
becomes saccharin to the taste
the words and deeds it employs
are an over-loaded waste

it makes me yell, "Fiddlesticks!"
to even up the see-saw-
hoping sugar-daddy quits
to join the cast of Hee Haw

but the dark and raw annoys
my civil sense of what's right
scatters away fleeting joys
and turns brightness into night

I live with dualities
it has to be this or that
can't deal with pluralities
they don't fit my welcome mat

I picked up tools, left my toys
finished school, didn't look back
fought silence with empty noise
unaware of what I lacked

dualities break me in two
pluralities make me one
I am one with you AND you
but you OR you can't be done

can I embrace dark and light-
as my true reality?
balance may help get it right-
Yin and Yang philosophy

yin in every yang a bit
spot of yang in every yin
but how do I make them fit-
how and where do I begin?

I guess I'm like a cookie
reverse of the Oreo
my inside playing hookie
the outside is all I know

inside me there's a "shadow"
created by doubt and fear
disliked people, a window
that makes my shadow appear

but if I keep pretending
my deep darkness isn't there
then the days will seem unending
with my false cheer or despair

if I can learn to be one
with my dark, unlovely parts-
how adept I might become
in the gathering of hearts!
