Seaside memories

by Essex68

Sandy toes and crashing waves
Ice cream cones, buckets and spades
Slot machines going all a jingle
Tender soles on sharpest shingles

Popcorn, doughnuts, fresh fried chips
Screaming kids and jelly fish
Kiss me quick and squeeze me slow
The tides gone out, where did it go?

Search the rock pools find a crab
A fallen star, or bladder wrack
Limpets, mussels, cockles too
A stranded fish, what should I do?

Now the sea seems far away
But will be back to save the day
I best go back to the sandy shore
And catch the sun a little more

All this sea air it makes me hungry
Mum brought a picnic “oh so yummy”
While the sun it dries my toes
She makes me wipe my runny nose

Beach balls, Frisbees, girls bikinis
These days they are so teeny weenie
I really should avert my eyes
But saying that I’m only five

Grannies on the one armed bandits
Spinning fruits, their luck long stranded
Ferris wheels and crashing dodgems
Scary rides that give you problems

The buzzing of the tattoo parlour
But I’m too young I must grow harder
I made my choice I will be back
But mum said I mustn’t do that

Fortune tellers, clowns that laugh
Strong man tests, they seem so daft
Because while he tries to hit the bell
His girlfriends eyes are someplace else

I love to go around on Victorian horse
That never bray, or make no noises
While the organ plays its merry tune
And says it’s time to go home soon

G'day Wayne...
One addition Wayne...sunburn; eke! I couldn't help but think of Cowes on Philip Island where I spent many a day. Back then the carnival, rock pools etc. were always an adventure to look forward to. Thanks for the memory Wayne.

You know what I can't ever remember getting sun burnt when I was a kid. My mum was always covering me with sun cream. The chance of getting sunburn this summer in the UK is next to nothing,it's been the wettest one for ages

I really enjoyed this, the way it evoked memories, the specific and vivid imagery, the simplicity, the clever use of meter and rhyme. Well done, Wayne!
