Only children should play war

by Essex68

As children we played war
Fresh aired summers, woods explored
Bases built, and teams collected
Our sound effects were quite effective

We didn’t have no hand grenades
Just old coke cans or lemonade
Sticks for guns, they looked real good
Like a little bunch of Clint Eastwood’s

My gun was an M16
I stripped the bark to make it clean
And held it up for the teams inspection
Then pointed it in your direction

Vocal bullets caused distraction
No need for any diversionary action
Air support? We don’t need that
Indestructible children, and that’s a fact

We charged the guns, they were imposing
As we tripped and laughed with runny noses
And then Johnny got two in the head
A double tap is always best

Then he got up like he always did
He was always the most happiest kid
There was no real bombs to harm
No booby traps or hot napalm
No mothers tears when we got home
Just grubby knees, hands and toes
No post trauma, no bad reactions
No prosthesis no lost in action
No body bags or flag draped boxes
No governments to count their losses
No fatherless children, no weeping wives
No forgotten hero’s, no suicides

W R Baker

Enjoyed reading the nice flow of this poem with an important and clear message. Unfortunately there are kids in the world who really are soldiers. Well written. Julian

Very well expressed, Wayne, with a message we should all take heed of.

Wayne your rhymes in this are excellent.

Should children play war?
When did or how did grownup learn war?
Is playing war healthy for children?
Does playing war as children create a cock on the block;
that other children look up to?
How should parents view there children playing war;
when there backs are turned
one child comes running crying?
Is playing war the first baby step in learning dominance?

I am sure questions could go on and on.

Is playing war playing survival of the fittest?

Isn't it sad that only children should play war games when playing war games has led us all to the brink; of the end game?

Play leads to; for real.

BWP... This poem really made me think about what media teaches our children and what we allow them to play.

Thanks Wayne...

That’s a lot of questions, I think the natural survival instinct is bred into al of us, and as children we play out the things that we expect to do as we get older. Much the same as all the animal kingdom e.g. play fighting for dominance etc. Humans are instinctively aggressive creatures in general so I suppose its not un natural for their offspring to undertake such rehearsal type games however innocent they seem at the time….

I agree with you on the subject of parents being more aware of what games their children play. Certainly with the introduction of games consoles kids are still playing war as they always did but now they do it sitting on their butts in front of a screen over working their fingers instead of being out in the fresh air interacting with other children. I have seen some of these video games and a lot of them are pretty damn graphic and a lot of parents don’t take heed to the age restrictions on the packaging
I think a great deal of people don’t give a hoot what their kids play. I mean there’s even a series of games called “Grand theft auto” Where you go around stealing cars and shooting people. Jeez what is the world coming too? It’s no wonder society is on a down hill spiral.

Thank you for the comment on the piece James

G'day Wayne...
If kids watch war movies then they want to emulate the heroes, and kids don't make those movies. I just like to see kids excercising and as long as nobody gets hurt and they come home safe and sound then all is well. Like you wrote, its a pity war wasn't just a kids game.
Thank you Wayne
