Palliative

by Ozymandias

Time trickles slowly down my crumpled sleeve,
But speak no words of comfort in the night –
We know they’re false; we know you soon will leave;
Your world moves on from this unsoothing sight.

We’ve known it all before, my sometime friend –
The rasping cut of steel through ugly flesh;
The knife that knows no rest, though bone shall bend
As life’s crude story spells each word afresh.

I crook my fingers now for shadow-play:
Rabbits and guns, perhaps an angry fist
Protecting vanity, to keep at bay
Dark recollections from a limping list.

The wise ones left, so many moons ago,
As words ran out and silence intervened –
The curtain fell upon the empty show,
The actors gone, the audience demeaned.

You’ll leave as well, the door closed on your void,
Lest it pursue you with a mocking phrase,
Eating at memories till they fade, destroyed,
Unable to evade life’s bitter gaze.

Come back to me one day when you have learned
Some better phrases, sparkling with new light;
And when in your discomfort you have turned
Your words to face our world - that time is right.

Aloha Rory...
How often that a 'dark' moment of thought can relay the muse within the best and least of US... of the many works you have posted this perhaps provides a 'tell' of the internal battle which we will all face... that "time" reveals to all of US the truth of "Life's bitter gaze"... In this moment of my own reflections, I find myself with you as friend... in this subject... in search for "some better phrases, sparkling with new light"... and morbidly finding none... each phrase of this work... and very much each line and mood of thought reflect within my life some moment, event, and/or person... quite the catch Rory... of my many foul balls hit... all of the best from this life, to you, and all of your relations... Michael.

    I am touched by the kindness of your words, Michael. I hasten to assure you that actually I am physically and psychologically fine! But in most of my poems what I do is imagine myself into a situation which then touches me somehow. This poem came out of reading what is probably the greatest novel ever written by an Australian, "The Fortunes of Richard Mahoney" by Henry Handel Richardson. There is a wonderful chapter in it which describes the slow death from cancer of a prominent politician, who is at first visited by polite friends who gradually come less and less often. It's gut-wrenching stuff and I couldn't get it out of my system. Eventually this poem fermented inside me and forced me to write it.

      Aloha Rory...
      "a situation which then touches me somehow"... the well from which all aspiring bards drink... I have found the best of words from such sources... many here at the spring of gp... your particular work brings to me the immediate... having watched the waning of many a better man to the humbling reality of dying flesh... however, many of the internal thoughts within our works do bleed of our own experiences, our own fears, our own morbid dreams... One would think that the celebration of life would be to revel in the happiness of the earthly body... the possibility of fellowship, friendship, and humble sharing... these seem such impossibilities within the boundarys of these times and the current situation in the US... should the progeny of these current time aristocrats experience just a touch of what you describe in your comments... a smidge of humanity... perhaps things would change for the positive... glum this thought though... when these minions fear only the smudge of bad press, and not what 'they' are really due... "friends who gradually come less and less often"... so too truth, when the game is one of the sopping of half-pennies from the masses of those who are mired under the oppressive nature of the human condition... what is experienced through a good read... and what is experienced through a living condition... can evoke such similar patterns of thought... Thanks again for your words... and I am happy to learn that your essence is whole and fluorishing... all of the best from this life, to you, and all of your relations... Michael.

Rory..this speaks loudly to me, both in craft and in content. It makes me think of great men like Ronald Reagan and Christopher Hitchens..intellectual giants who succumbed to illness. Reagan, who was always so personable and sharp, sunk into the dark void of Alzheimers. And Mr. Hitchens, who was a brilliant and prolific writer (and an avowed atheist) was taken by cancer. When they were both in their last days, I wondered about some things..Reagan was a man of faith. I wonder if, in his rare lucid moments, he ever questioned it. And conversely, I wonder if Mr. Hitchens ever considered crying out to God. Either way..you have captured something big in this poem. It's great.

    We all go one way or another, I guess. I hope most of us ask questions about our lives. My father had Alzheimers in his last few years. He was a highly extroverted man with a fine mind, popular with many, not unlike the politician I referred to in my answer to Michael. He was also an atheist and his condition cut him like a barb before he sank too deep into it - perhaps he also cried out, as it were. My view is that the wise among us gain some insight into the human condition towards our end.

How so touchy and strongly moving the piece gleam of.
The words best fit their places in each line and the rhymes easily fall into place with each nerve-pull leaving the reader with that feeling of pleasurable pain.

I can always feel a touch of mastery in your piece, Rory.
