4th of July

by Rabbitt

Remember Remember the 4th of July
Men gathered in taverns in years gone by
As their tankards were emptied, their voices arose
Who once were our kin were becoming our foes

Far cross the sea King George sat on his throne
Sipping his wine as he sat all alone
As his bottles emptied, his decision was clear
The colonies owe more to the Mother land dear

Men quietly gather dressed in feathers and skins
Paint on their faces, a tea party begins
They crept onto the vessels, King George had sent
The cargo English tea- the price raised one cent

Into the harbor the tea boxes fell
To be washed away when the waves they did swell
Twas nary a battle, but a statement for sure
King George heard it clear and sent troops to deter

Those men in the tavern were not stopped by this ploy
They sent a new message- life, liberty and joy
They said all are equal, as ordained by the Lord
Their vote would be counted, by proxy or sword

King George he just laughed
At this insolent chaff
But the shot heard all round
Turned his grin to a frown

The war rang on for many a year
The fighting was brutal, the cost was dear
When the smoke finally settled, when the red coats did cave
A new land was born for the Free and the Brave

Ah, great recount of revolutionary war history filled to the brim with patriotic enthusiasm. I felt a rush of pop-bang-boom at the end...
we had more fireworks last night during a thunderstorm, celebrations still going strong!! So enjoyed your poem, Mary Ann
