Pride of a Lion

by nprimemin

A lone cub pretending to conquer his sire
Pounced on the tuft of the tail he most admired
Waking from his slumber from the puny attack
He gave the cub a light tap that almost broke its back

With pangs of hunger a growl built in his chest
And with a roar like thunder he got rid of the pest
He stopped at a precipice looking over a cliff
Annoyed his lionesses were gone feeling something was amss

There he looked down to see them dragging back a kill
But froze like a statue with a premonition boding ill
He saw them get surrounded by the the hyena pack
And with no hesitation he went on the attack

Swiftly leaping from stone to stone he heard the help calls
Of the six lionesses he sent hunting surrounded by the squall
By the time he arrived they were stuck in the tree
With the hyenas barking laughs ringing disrespectfully

They all turned when they heard his challenging roar
They backed away from the carcass ready for all out war
His claws did rend and jaws did bite
As he searched for the leader to end the fight

He saw her barking orders to snap and back away
But another male lion burst in with a wild melee in the fray
A quick glance over and caught a glimpse of his brother
Whose fierce reputation was avoided by all others

Now he knew he can zero in on the pack matriarch
Whose neck her severed cleanly without so much as a tooth mark
The lionesses slid clumsily down the tree and guarded the meal
And chased the remainders who still thought they could steal

The two male lions shared the the food first
Unaware of the plans of the hyaenas that dispersed
When they all finished he welcomed his brother to the pride
Knowing his territory would be better protected with him at his side

When they got back a most horrid scene was displayed
Blood bones and fur and half eaten cub remains
Two pregnant lionesses fought bravely to the death
The two male lions set out following the tracks that they left

The lionesses blocked their way to the front
But didn't lift a paw hearing the loud roars and grunts
The two males pounced as one with so much ferocity
They would never be satisfied quelling their animosity

It was over in a flash as he fought side by side with his kin
The bruises in the battle were like medals to them
They expanded their territory where no hyena could hide
Together with his brother and a new respect for the pride
