My Inner Kid

by nprimemin

Had a camping trip scheduled with a friend
To live off the land for a week in nature to blend
I know this may sound silly but along the ride
I wanted to get in touch with the kid inside

I pretended to be Tarzan and swung from a tree
Fell on my back and he laughed at me
I pulled my pants down after the thunk
To reveal a lion cloth over my swimming trunks

I made a spear out of a branch that fell from the tree
My friend shook his head and couldn't believe it was me
I dove in the waterlooking to nspear some fish
But every time I jabbed I came up with a miss

He took his pole out and caught two
I was so tired I didn't know what to do
I wound up begging he said you need to get real
So I started the fire to have some of the meal

I rubbed a stick until my hands were sore
Pretending we were cavemen living out in the raw
He just shook his head and took out his matchbook
Starting the banked fire so the fish would cook

We saw a couple of people so I shouted a war cry
Pretending to defend the territory they dared to defy
Looking at me like I was crazy they walked away
So I danced a war dance to continue my play

I hunted a rabbit thinking it some mythical beast
My friend said to stop the nonsense or i wouldn't eat
What he didn't know was I already set a trap
I dug a hole with a teetering rock and a string attached

I slung the beast over my back saying my skill was legend
I won't repeat what he said but it wasn't too pleasant
The week went by fast but I enjoyed what I did
Play acting my adventures by getting in touch with the kid

Looking back now I I finally know why
I wanted to get in touch with the kid inside
I wasn't allowed to play too much with others as a child
But now I'm aching all over from going wild in the wild
