for my mother

Dirty, unkept....
meaningful dust
To the average eye, it wont say too much
You have to know the story behind the years of neglect -
meaningful dust
dirty, unkept.

A young woman in love
Articulate, smart
Musuems and opera -
A passion for Art
Empowered with wisdom, words
A compassionate heart.

Perfectly attired from head to foot
turned many a head her way
But a secret she harbored would be her demise -
which she kept till her dying day

She married and buried her dreams
Her writings
Her yearning for life
Became the perfect facade of a dutiful wife
As the years passed, becoming bitter and cold
She passed the days with a drink and grew
gracefully old

So the sip now and then, turned into a friend
and she took her comfort there
And no one confronted her
though there were many conjectures
and she drowned in her own despair

I look around at what is left of her being...
.but now with a much keener eye
A master she was at pretending
and all of the elaborate lies

...I understand you now Mom
and have grown to accept
the meaningful dust
piled over years of neglect.
