Memories..Have Their Space, But I'm In Control!

by wickedone

Memories can be the most comforting thing. You can hold onto them and bring them out dust them off relive every moment of your life. Uniquely to memories you can lock them away bring them out later, and sometime later relive them again. Its up to you to allot a memory its space based on its importance and your needs, remember you have it, it does not control you.

How about examples lets try just a few, like visiting grandma and grandpa's house back in the day. Memories are not just visual cues. Smells can trigger the most vivid images too. Like the smell of hot apple pie make with slivers of cinnamon sticks and vanilla too coming right out of the oven like grandma made. Then grandma putting a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top right in the middle. That image you would never want to forget so you file it away in your 'special' memory set.

Then there are those bad memories such as loss, pain, suffering too. No one of us escapes these memories we all have had a few. These are still very much a part of you. And believe it or not let me make it perfectly clear. Even though it may hurt physically, mentally you cannot erase memories or throw them away. They lay in wait if not dealt with or acknowledged, and rear their ugly heads in the most inconceivable place. Somehow someway you have to come to understanding and acknowledge them in whatever way is good for you.

Every once in a while you will find it easier and easier to bring hurtful memories out have a good cry, once again put them away until you no longer fill that particular need someday. When you feel you have visited that place that time that space and you only feel comfort, peace, no questions reside it might be a good time to boot those particular memories out from where they reside.

The point of all this is to say that memories can be helpful in some odd sort of way. Yes some are very beautiful and some painful I agree. Some even very hurtful and cold, some the last thing on earth is to hold on to them is what you want to be told. But if you look at this way I think you will see that memories good or bad, happy or sad, are what makes up our personal unique history like no one else but you and me.

Besides what happened back then is not what is happening now. We are in control of our own lives ourselves. But the reality is our memories tell us where we have been, so we can then continue to plan where our future lies and where we hopefully choose to be.

It's nice to recall all memories so I totally agree with you Wanda. Sometimes hearing a song, a smell, a look or even just passing by a visited place can recall some of the best times you have had.Very nice poem sister.
