Last Leaf

by Zbird

Last Leaf by Bonnie Johnson
10/22/07

In spring buds grow on the tree,
The buds become leaves,
Provide shade in the summer,
Shelter from the heat.

Come autumn the leaves turn,
Fall from the tree,
But one lone leaf hangs,
As if the tree clings to it.

The tree must let it go,
It falls to join the others,
Scattered on the ground,
Nesting beneath the tree.

You grew in me,
I nurtured you, loved you,
Raised you and,
Like the last leaf you,

Tugged to be free from me,
Pulled until I let you go,
Let you find life on your own,
Will you find what you seek?

In the spring new buds will appear,
The leaves will return to the tree,
In the spring you will not return,
You were my last leaf.

I wrote this poem after watching a leaf struggle to hold onto the tree as winds buffetted it around. Finally it's hold was broken and it fell sadly alone to the ground. In my mind I wasn't sure if the tree was holding onto the leaf or the leaf to the tree, but correlating it with my daughter moving out and moving on I related to the tree trying to hang on knowing it must let go.

I simply loved this poem about the ubiquitous situation of the departure of loved ones who do not belong to us and make us realize that true love is not selfish. Thank you.

PS allow me to say that the last line of set 4 of verses could be improved.
