Making the Right Choice

by liarbird

For three years now my brother Ron, and Felix, Jack and me,
Would on an April weekend head up near the high country,
To spend a few days near a creek, that gave up lumps of gold,
But we would have to spend some time in water freezing cold.

Because we didn’t pan, we didn’t dig, we thought we had an edge,
When we camped in isolation with an educator dredge,
We knew dredging was illegal but were prepared to take a punt,
‘Cause Felix is a city lawyer, and knows the law from back to front.

So if the mob from Forestry, did appear and snoop about,
We knew that Felix with his wisdom would work the bugger’s out,
For he was high on kickbacks, he’d find their weakest spot,
And knew that with the dredging, if there’s gold we’d get the lot.

Because Felix is a lawyer, this is what he’s trained to do,
He’s out to take advantage and prepared to turn the screw,
But he discovered more than gold, and strangely told us lies…
That bloody lawyer Felix! The dredgings’ a disguise.

And now the jigsaw puzzles fitting with the pieces all as one,
I often wondered about Felix and his trips to Jamieson,
The excuses that he made up for the drive to town alone,
But then Felix is a lawyer, so I suppose we should have known.

Even lawyers have a conscience and Felix is no different,
Around the campfire late at night, he sat; his head was bent,
Felix admitted he had let us down; this needs to be resolved,
He said the gold was not his lust; a woman is involved.

Three years ago Felix confessed he drove to Jamieson alone,
Where he met up with a pretty girl, and to us he kept unknown,
And every year since we’ve been dredging, Felix slipped away
To see that pretty girl again, and to have his wicked way.

Felix felt he let us down, but it’s none of our business,
And we were proud to know that he, was willing to confess,
So Ronny said, “Come on ‘old son’, now your secret’s out,
Let’s all jump into the car, and see what this girls’ about”.

I’m sure that Felix felt relieved we gave him our consent
To sneaking off behind our backs that he thought we’d resent,
But turning up at his girl’s home, there came a big surprise,
And this was fairly plain to see, it’s clear in Felix eyes.

She stood there at the open door with Mum and Dad behind,
And in her arms she held a bundle, and Felix was resigned,
To thinking he’s a Father now, but how would he had known
The lass had fallen pregnant; she never called him on the phone.

Felix took the floor in courtroom style and wore his lawyers hat,
He lied he would have rushed up here and married her ‘like that’,
He said at least the baby then would have the safety of wedlock,
Not illegitimate and fatherless for kids at school to mock.

Dad called Felix to one side, and gave this explanation to him…
He mentioned nights held in debate and what could turn out grim,
“We all decided in the end, it’s best for all we don’t ‘annoy ya’,
For a bastard’s better in our family than a bloody city lawyer”.

Awww, a great story, Lindsay, really fun to read. Gosh, gold dredging as well as I truly enjoy lawyers getting their just desserts. Those folks really didn't like lawyers, huh? Didn't even want his money. Tee-hee. Cheers, Mary Ann

    G'day Mary Ann...
Lawyers are necessary, but gee a lot of them circle like vultures if they spot a pot of gold.
Dredging as I remember it Mary Ann is banned now thank God...we found gold, but the damage it does to the river bed.
    Thanks Mary Ann.

I got amongst the dredging a couple of times Glen.
You've got to be prepared to get wet, cold and used to deep holes. You don't find gold until you find bedrock. Of course the beer, barbecue and tall stories at the end of the day make it all worth while.

    Merry Christmas Gail...
Thanks for reading and commenting Gail. Actually I based this poem on a camping trip we had when we were panning for gold in the high country. In the poem I dunno what happened to the gold, but on the trip, three of us shared about fifteen specks. After getting wet, cold and with aching muscles our gold mining days were over.
    Thank you Gail.

Now that is a poem in itself! Not any gold to pan in the US, except a few old mines in Colorado where the streams are left open for tourists!

You definitely have a niche of your own here on GotPoetry? I think. Which is a good thing, since storytelling (narrative) poems are somewhat out of favor compared with lyrical ones, and poems that are genuinely funny and whimsical are scarce as well. Lest we forget, our earliest recovered poetry is narrative: The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Iliad, the Odyssey...and some of the best: "Paradise Lost" and "The Canterbury Tales" for instance.

Comic poems like those of Odgen Nash and James Thurber have a similar feel to "Making the Right Choice." I read it with interest, chuckled at the end, and wished more poets would turn their attention to telling a witty anecdote in verse.
