Hissing Heart

Hissing Heart

Experts say to read poems,
journals, and novels
if he wants to write poetry.
So he labors through
the introductions from anthologies
of sonnets, triolets, sestinas and free verse.
Stacks grow on chairs, desks,
beds, and windowsills of freshly purchased
hardbacks, paperbacks and journals.

Collins, Levine, Kooser,
Nash and Oliver call him to lessons
but he is not a schoolboy.
He has a hissing heart,
so writing is entrancing,
pulling forth a storehouse
of secreted pains, passions, and fears.

Each page is his confessional;
the pen his priest.
He works away unaware that revamping,
a wash of his soul,
lies before him
begging that he open the covers,
turn each page
and become reborn.

okay! i really like this one. the only change i would make is get rid of the weak ing words in the last verse to make it even stronger. good write!
