When will we ever learn?

by Leggolas

The world is full of idiots.
Of paralysing mind spigots
of grotesque, baying, blind bigots
who spew sweet biled discern.

A trickling, pickling, sleek entice,
infectious plague,
compelling splice,
a frothing, frenzied, wholesome vice
arousing all that yearn.

Deformed, the swarm’s oblivious awe
sweeps forth to purge,
as those before,
vain hatred fuels each raging core
as civilisations burn.

Thus cornucopian craved crusade,
neath sanctimonious masquerade
sears seething scars that nought shall fade,
as era takes its turn.

And as dawn’s broken remnants clasp their smoulder and inurn,
I ask mankind this question.

When will we ever learn?

It is quite unfathomable that, despite thousands of years of conflict, devastation, cessation, reflection, amendment, we still end up doing the same, again, again and again. It is a shame but we are becoming worse. I would like to think that there is hope but I just dont see it. Sad that our children and grand children must grow up in a world filled with so much grief and hate.

Time upon time, we make the same mistakes, yet never does it seem to dawn that this is not the way forward for mankind. Our children and our childrens children deserve a better existence than the one we are preparing for them. What will it take for the message to penetrate that it is time for a change to secure a better future for us all. Thankyou for your comment my friend, it is much appreciated. Fond Regards. Mark.

Dear Ozymandias, your endorsement is well received and I'm glad such imagery was evoked. As for those elements that puzzle, they are an integral part of the poem. "paralysing mind spigots", refers to those that sleakly seek to plug clarity of thought by the process of verbal discimination wrapped in a syrupy guise that appeals to those that feast upon its content, but also allures those weaker and more vunerable to its vibrant throng, hence "spew sweet biled discern". "dawn’s broken remnants clasp their smoulder and inurn", refers to the aftermath, for the those that are left behind are left to salvage smouldering fragments of their life, burying those loved and lost upon the way. I hope this clarifies the intent of that written. May I thank you for your incisive comment, it is much appreciated. Fond Regards. Mark.

It seems to me that the question asked, answers itself within the context.
A perpetually repeated process, like applicating idiocy, implies an intrinsic attribute of the system that produces it.
Unfortunately,I believe that hope is the byproduct of that process.I can't feel hope - as much as I love illusions.
But sometimes I feel comfort in the thought of a much bigger system we are part of,where words don't even have a meaning.
Maybe there's something to learn from that.We of complicated codes, and ridiculous social values.

It is my life, my living example, that might inspire my child or someone else to help those less fortunate and help to heal or circumvent the broken systems of greed and debauchery that humans are addicted to. Governments can not help hurting people, only concerned people, with pure motives, can pull desperate lives out of their holes. We are more connected int his world than we like to think. I believe that if I help someone on the other side of the world, it does affect my life in an epic way. When will we ever learn? And as for the question....

"When will we ever learn?"

If you think along Darwinian lines, you'll realise that we will never learn: Man shall simply disappear if we don't have what it takes to be successful. Nature will not tell us twice.

Humans are capable of learning a lesson on the scale of a single lifetime - maybe even two or three - but, beyond that, our species seems hell-bent on relearning everything from scratch, and making all the same mistakes again, only on a grander scale and with better tools.

As a former soldier, I appreciate that lessons can be learnt from battles fought hundreds or thousands of years ago. But this is rare.

We might develop lofty ideas and ideals but, as ever, the first casualty is always the plan.

As long as too many people rely upon their government and their fellow man to provide for both their thoughts and welfare they will be enslaved by a few---and this few relies on such weakness to perpetuate that enslavement, which enables those few to enhance their pockets and power. When any form of government becomes purposely destructive in such ends, it is the right of people to alter or to abolish it (so it was said in the Declaration of Independence). But only the strong can rise above the fray---and history shows this upheaval never comes from within the masses. I’ve lived and/or worked and traveled in 100s of countries of the world’s continents for some 60 years and I have yet to find a country as wealthy as America or as free as the American people. We are blessed by God more than any other people on earth. I have also found that capitalism combined with the Judeo-Christian values/morals working under our strong Constitution is by far the best form of government and it provides its people with the best know social system. However, the many deviations from this system begets the worst of all human conditions. It is not the idiots of our country but the attitudes of intelligent hard-working people that will make or break it.

When will we learn? The truth is there---good people must rely upon themselves and not to the few or their government. I like your poem and the style, but would suggest like another much older poem stated:

“In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!”

In a world so lost to chaos and disruption...where would we be if not for our dreams and for our faith, that there will indeed come a time when enough has truly been enough. Recognizing that change is necessary, is an important part of the puzzle, but settling in and getting cozy with the fact that it won't change...is not a place I want to lay my head.

I know I commented your poetry about a plethora of times, but due to the incredible amount of intellect and creativity you have, as stated through symbolism in this poem, I decided to comment this. (once again) This is just too true. There is a diagnostic process swept cleverly and enticingly upon the pond of this poem, and the wavering distress is embedded in its crusade. There lies, a realm of humanity that is digging into the hellish embers of life, famine, war, etc, for they truly emancipate their own skins, just to be broken down again by the forgetfulness of the rest of the human, metaphysical string. Bigots/spigots, entice the bloods of those prejudice fools, those people who sleep on other people's worry, while laughing their dreaming brains off, like the whistle of a chimera waking up the 'dreamer' to his/her own abode. Those spaded-hearts. Those pretentious 'bigots' as you state, are incarcerated in their own skins. Jailed in their own madnesses. Thus the originality of life is blocked by the rainfall of technology's own heartless intention. There lies, an animal...and then a spade...and then a vision to collision. Oh, pity me, for you will pity you (generally speaking) consequence played cyclically intertwining with ambivalence. ambivalence placed, with only sadistic blackness. a sarcastic oxymoron. But we, as a nation, forget out to do the things to take us to a better world...if we were to treat our unities with respect the unity within would be of a deeper more personal rapport that would reflect upon the moat of humanity's castle!
