Poems - Nature's Little Band
| | Nature's Little Bandby mikangel
I walked along the road one day, a’whistling a tune
My guitar was strapped upon my back, I think it was in June.
When I came across a shrunken man, full of grief and so forlorn
I had to ask,”What’s wrong my friend, why is your heart so torn?”
He said, “I’ve lost my love of life, and never will I see
Another blue sky overhead, nor will I be happy”
“I’ll tell you what,” I said to him, “I have a little time.”
“I’ll sing for you a happy song, and do it for a dime”
“And if you really want to smile and laugh with ,oh, such glee,”
“For another dime I’ll get a band to play along with me.”
He looked around, saw no one else, and said,”I’ll have a go.
It’ll be worth my twenty cents to sit back and watch the show.”
And then he sat and crossed his legs upon that hardened clay
I cleared my throat, checked my strings, and I began to play.
It really was a simple tune, I’d played it oft before
A jaunty little melody that I love to explore
I sang my song, he looked at me,said,”I hear no band.”
I said, “Just wait, I’m not through yet.” and then I raised my hand.
All at once the tiny chirp of a cricket came floating through the air
And the meadowlark sang his sweet refrain for everybody there
The bullfrog , with his bassy tones, kept rhythm, perfect time
And all I had to do was sing, with words that didn’t rhyme.
The coyote howled at the early moon, the donkey brayed, just ’cause
The honeybee buzzed all around, the chipmunk clapped his paws
And as I played my little song, what music filled the air,
The man just laughed and tapped his toes at what had happened there
Then I was done, and so he stood and said,”I’ve been a fool
To forget that life is all around, I’m not the only one.
That hurts and cries when things just don’t go right.
I’ll not forget the little song you played for me tonight”
As a tear was rolling down his cheek, I turned to walk away
He told me that he owed me more for whar U’d done today
And then he took a dollar bill and placed it in my hand
Then I turned and slowly walked away, me and nature’s little band.
