Poems - Changing Touring Habits
| | Changing Touring Habitsby liarbird
I’ve always been a tourist, who will travel through this land,
I’ve been in the high country and the Simpson Desert sand,
Collected salt from in Lake Eyre, and fished in Tassie streams,
Yet the bug continues biting, to keep me living tourist dreams.
I’ve clicked photographs in Kakadu, videoed Menindee Lakes,
Seen formation of a billowed cloud just before the season breaks,
Flew across the Bungle Bungle’s and admired the Kimberley,
Rubber necked along the Ocean road, beside a wild and restless sea.
I’ve climbed the steps of Uluru, been to Baw Baw when there’s snow,
So you’d almost think with where I’ve been there’s nowhere else to go,
Yet to visit all Australia’s beauty, well, our lives are far too brief,
But I’ll keep travelling that endless road…this time to the Barrier Reef.
I can imagine in my mind, what beauty grows up from the sand,
Amongst the colour of the corals, with it’s aquatic life on hand,
The waving of the seaweeds in water clear and cobalt blue.
I just can’t wait to get to Cairns, and admire this splendour too.
Of course in Cairns it’s all set up for a touring bloke like me,
And brochures mention danger signs, that sometimes I might see,
Like box jellyfish and stone fish, with a help advisory file,
And I’m made aware that sometimes, there might be a crocodile.
Being adventurous and wishing, to be where the corals most,
I hired out a little dinghy, and navigated further up the coast,
I left the boat to freely drift, then made a ‘blue’ I can’t afford
When trying to gain a tourist look…I fell overboard!
The initial thud that hit me brain, was that word crocodile!
And I’m two hundred yards from shore, so I started tasting bile,
Then I saw this fella on the sand, which stood there watching me,
He looked like an old beachcomber, and to him I made a plea.
Bobbing in the clear blue water, and doing well to stay afloat,
I yelled out to this fella while I clung on to the boat…
“Are there any crocs around here mate?” Then he alleviated fears.
“There’s not a one” the bloke replied. “They ain’t been here for years”.
I can’t tell you how relieved I felt, to hear that local lore,
So I let the boat just drift away, to swim back to the shore,
But for the sake of interest, prior to splashing with me ‘hocks’,
I asked this simple question, “How’d you get rid of the crocs?”
And with the boat ten yards away, and me upon me own,
“We did nothing,” said the beachcomber, in his assuring tone,
“No we didn’t have to do a thing, but come here and grab a spot,
Where we could sit and watch the sharks, clean up the bloody lot!”

G'day Melly...
Melly, in reality, you won't catch me anywhere near sharks, nor crocodiles for that matter. It's bad enough here at the moment with the brown snakes moving about.
Thanks Melly.

Top of the line travel mate you'd make, Lindsay! I love your descriptions of far away places and accommodations, truly brought to life in your poem. Oh what I wouldn't give to see the Great Barrier Reef, truly a wonderful sight to see - from INSIDE the boat, silly tourist! Enjoyed so much the smiles and chuckles at the end, Mary Ann

G'day Mary Ann...
Sadly the Great Barrier Reef is shrinking due to pollution etc. however it is still a true marvel, full of sharks, stone fish, jelly fish stingers...but no crocodiles. They'll be hanging around your campsite.
Thanks Mary Ann.

G'day Jenni...
How nice to hear from you. Thanks for popping in and having a read. Your beloved Windies have arrived and next week it's into the tests again. Maybe you should have snuck in to Aus hiding on one of the suitcases. I'd love to see you out here one day Jenni...just stay clear of crocodiles and sharks.
Thanks Jenni.

G'day Steve...
Thanks for reading and leaving a comment Steve. I see yesterday that one of these saltwater crocodiles; about four metres long has found a new home in a Texas zoo. I wonder if they put any sharks in with it.
Thank you Steve.

I guess Harry that crows are bloody worse than crocs and sharks. They pick your eyes out and let you live. We've got plenty of crows up our way too Harry. At least ours can play football...ha ha.
Thanks again Harry.

Thank you Linda...
I watched some video of a bloke texting as he walked along a suburban street in the US and was confronted by a bear.
His reaction was priceless, so I guess we all have our wildlife to fear. My daughter spent time at South Plains College a few years back and now she keeps going back. She loves the US.
Thank you Linda
