Poems - The After effects (War)

The After effects (War)

by Dreaming-Demon

Bullets fly by, as I run for cover.
Friends fall around me,
men that I would call my brother.
Explosions in the distance,
drown out most the noise.
Screams resound in my head,
detroying all the joys.
I take a life to save my own,
my innocence is gone.
I'm over here surviving,
but I feel like a pawn.
To arms we go, gun in hand
killing to be free.
Fighting for my homeland,
has taken parts from me.
I try to fall asleep at night,
war repeating in my head.
I lay awake sometimes...
only wishing to be dead.

wow- many favourite lines in this- but best i think:
I take a life to save my own,
my innocence is gone.

quite poignant.....
to arms we go,gun in hand-
killing to be free.
excellant the imagery here is really fantastic
and the juxtaposition of concepts- death /killing vs freedom. powerful.

another class poem, so many great lines in there. i love the way you get the emotion across. something you always manage to do very effectively. and that i suppose is what makes for good poetry, its not a painting - its a bunch of words trying to invoke the reader to 'feel' happy, sad, angry, etc. take it easy, conor
