Poems - Twenty Two Days
| | Twenty Two Daysby maryanns
Twenty two days of November shall pass
till the hardy and lucky and wealthy express
expected regards for all they possess
on a day full of thankfulness.
For the roof overhead, for money to spend;
clothes on their backs, for family and friends
sharing a turkey and giblets and yams
on a day full of thankfulness.
For football games and a quarterback pass
for a tight-end’s catch and a ninety yard dash
as thousands of lungs exhale all at once
on a day full of thankfulness.
For heroes and villains in jerseys and sweats
that end at the knee and get covered with grass
one could believe the world is at peace
on a day full of thankfulness.
Pray for the people who have nothing to eat
pray for small children who live on the streets
pray for the casualties that we never see
on a day full of thankfulness.
Please, do not forget to pray for our troops
who couldn’t come home to be with their kids
reflect on the thousands serving at risk
on a day full of thankfulness.
For RJ and his companions in Taji, Iraq…
least they think we might forget them.

again very well written - how many tours are these soldiers expected to do?? they are running them physically and psychologically into the ground. and all this stemmed from 911 and the wish for revenge. people of america have been involved in some kind of war ever since vietnam. why on earth arent all americans demanding troops home now?
kind regards.

I truly share your concern, Conor. Perhaps they buy their own fear mongering propaganda that driving this particular segment of our population into the ground is "necessary"... flies in the face of reason, though. Now Ft. Hood... should be blamed on individual stress and alcohol abuse. I am already appaled to read right-wing comments posted beneath news stories... "haji's amid the troops". Thank you so much for your sincere comments. Very best wishes, Mary Ann

These poems make me sad. I hate that they are all still there. I have a good friend deploying in december and I see no point in her going. She already lost brother and her other brother lost his legs and was sent to the Landstuhl hospital here in May. It makes so sense. They are doing all the work, risking there lives (and humanity, Ive seen some guys come back and they went crazy) and they cant even be with their families and friends for the holidays. Uuugh, its so frustrating.
This deserves a 10 and so much more Mary Ann.

Oh Jenna... thank you so very much for sharing your thoughts here. Tragic the sacrifice many have made. I cannot imagine the suffering of those who go home to lives so different than the one they left home with, the strength they must have to persevere. I always think of my friend Tomas in his wheelchair... and what might have been for him. Gosh, I never meant to make you cry and I so appreciate your comments. Very best wishes, Mary Ann

Wow, I dont know what to say mary ann, this is one of those poems that brings out the warcries in my heart. It is good people like you that make this all worth while. Knowing that the pain we feel over here doesnt go un-noticed by everyone really means the difference between giving up and driving on to a lot of people. People can say all day long how badly they want the troops to come home, and how rediculous this "war" or "police action" isover here. But once they say it, the thought leaves and there minds go right back to their lives back home. Its not their fault, its human nature. So very few people truly understand the full extent of what we do over here and what we have to live with. And they shouldnt have to because that is what seperates soldiers from civilians. I enlisted to do this to myself and my family by my own mind and right hand. So when I hear stories of exitement about the holidays it makes me happy. Happy tears fall from my face knowing that good people are sitting at home with their families feeling safe and loved, not having to worry about this mess over here that is our lives. I thank you for your dedication as well as your understanding and kind words you have written here. I will never forget this. My brothers here will never forget this either. You are an outstanding writer with a level head and for that I applaud you. You are a good friend and for that I am thankful.
Thank you

This writer is at a loss for words... only able to say think you from my heart and send along my very best wishes that you all be safe together with lots of communications home during the holidays. I may be incorrect, but I suspect you're mostly First Cavalry Division... either way, I am so saddened by the tragedy at Ft. Hood, appalled in fact that those who have suffered so many casualties already had to experience this additional loss. Be well and continually strong... Your concerned friend, Mary Ann

Flows really well Mary Ann...I know little about thanksgiving day, apart from a sharp drop in turkey numbers. It certainly is a day when all countryfolk should take the time to think about those in far off and dangerous places who are not home to celebrate an important date on the calendar.
