The Sixties

by liarbird

They’re getting older now
and some of them are gone,
but their tunes are still inside me,
so their songs keep living on.
We don’t see them live as much now,
just like me they’re slowing down,
but the beauty of their melodies
and harmony deserve renown.

I would have liked to stop the clock
but this world keeps moving fast,
ever changing are the genres,
and so many never last,
still I can always find a singer
whose not singing rock and roll,
but folk songs from the sixties,
and with passion from the soul.

Oh God I miss the sixties with sweet flowers in my hair,
And I still harmonize those protest songs to show the world I care.
I grew my hair long past my shoulders;
rebelled when the Asian war unfurled,
and joined thousands claiming free love is enough to save the world.

And today upon the Internet
theirs are face’s young and bright,
with the music all acoustic
and standing in the spotlight.
The audience are listening
and applauding is polite,
and I don’t give a damn
the video is still in black and white.

Oh God I miss the sixties with sweet flowers in my hair,
and I still harmonize those protest songs to show the world I care.
I grew my hair long past my shoulders;
rebelled when the Asian war unfurled,
and joined thousands claiming free love is enough to save the world.

That's one great ballad, my friend... I can picture the faces and the names, all of them in their younger days. Perhaps we watched the same sixties restrspective show. Amazing music in amazing times.
Really enjoyed the tribute, Mary Ann

    G'day mary ann...
I was browsing the net and listened to Peter, Paul and Mary, then Simon and Garfunkel and then Bob Dylan. I guess that's what inspired me to write this poem.
    Thanks again mary ann.

    G'day Conor...
Thanks for the heart mate. I'm really pleased that I grew up in the sixties when I see how the world appears to be these days. However in reality apart from technology expanding the way it has and me getting older, I don't suppose the human side of life has changed much. The same good and bad keep popping up. As for free love...I don't think is free any more. Somewhere along the line someone has to pay.
    Thanks again Conor mate.

    G'day Ronald...
Thank you Ronald for your comment. Oh gosh yeah, we can't have anything natural anymore can we. We just had Brittney Spears over here bringing headlines for lip synching on her shows. I watched a doco on John Lennon in the US recently. The white house did not like him.
Thanks Ronald for your great comment mate.

I hope you enjoyed 'bad moon rising' Harry. The sixties seemed much better to me, but then again, anytime is the best if you're breathing in and out.
    Thanks again mate.

Lindsay I'm so glad to have read this ballad
of yours, I felt free and well, a hippie I guess
I've had enough of wars, as per my poem
The Duke, give me the folk songs of
Caroel King, what a poet she was! Simon
and garfunkel and that's real music.

Your poem gets me started

How are you going? Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, I still love listening to S & G, and many more of the groups who gave me a lot of pleasure years ago and still do. Not many good protest songs these days, but you may like to listen to 'united breaks guitars on youtube' It near destroyed an airline in the US. Ah, the power of music.
    Thanks Ilan.

Awwww now Lindsay! Do ya know what you've gone and done?!
You've made me want to write another poem about the sixties! This was great to read and I sure wish I knew the tune you had in your head to go with it. Maybe your daughter will sing it, huh? If she does, I want to buy a copy!!! ;0)
Anyway...you gotta heart from me too, Linds.

Ah, it's so good to hear from you Julie. I gathered you'd been flat out like a lizard drinking. I don't think Megan will bother but you never know. I guess a tune that's already been a huge hit if Kevin Johnson's 'rock and roll gave me the best years of my life' ...now I'm waiting with baited breath for your take on the sixties Julie.
Thanks Julie for your comment and heart.
