Poems - Nothing Says Love Like A Gal With A Pall Mall In The Bar Light
| | Nothing Says Love Like A Gal With A Pall Mall In The Bar Lightby JPerry1980
Nothing Says Love Like A Gal With A Pall Mall In The Bar Light
07 March 2010
I knew it was true love,
the moment she lit up the non-filtered Pall Mall.
Like clockwork, it happened as Mel McDaniel started singing,
"Lord have mercy, baby's got her blue jeans on."
In the glow of the jukebox, I found love in her cigarette light.
An ode to her Zippo,
with such grace she flipped her gentle finger against it,
the fire came alive as if she summoned it from her beauty,
as if the gods of fire performed their miracle by her graceful calling.
A thousand PBR's could not contain my excitement,
as I watched her fingers twist around the cigarette,
the grayish smoke left her porcelain like angel body,
I'd say the smoke drifted towards Heaven above,
but it already touched those pearly gates,
as it circled inside her immaculate body.
I cursed at the wait to the bathroom,
swore wrath-filled vengeance upon my bladder,
in knowing that I may miss but a momentarily glimpse,
as she donned the cigarette on her red lips.
The pigs must have been flying outside,
for I found myself swearing at beer, my former savior,
before I saw her lifting the Pall Mall with her hand.
After blessing the urinal with my DNA,
I departed the bathroom to still see her fingers.
Yes!, The non-filtered Pall Mall was still cradled there!
My joy was not destroyed as my angel still awaited on her bar stool!
With great courage, like a soldier touching the ground of Omaha Beach,
I carried myself, almost without stumbling, to her beckoning glow.
"Darlin', is that a non-filtered Pall Mall you have there?",
my voice asked her, so careful I was not to stutter,
when she turned and her dark Spanish hair fluttered like a butterfly.
In my mind danced the home we would have,
the Norman Rockwell paintings adorning our living abode,
the moments of passionate ecstasy we would partake,
the days and years we would spend enthralled with one another.
"Yeah, the drunk redneck over there gave me one,
say, you wouldn't happen to have a menthol would you?",
after she spoke these words it was as if the Knights Templar,
with all their regalia, spiked a thousand swords through my soul,
like a British monarch of lore, I was cheated my wife by the Black Death.
The odyssey back to my jukebox table was arduous,
the only comfort I felt was that I would reach my Pabst Blue Ribbon,
as Ulysses finally reached the embracing arms of Penelope,
and under the glow of the great jukebox giving voice to Merle Haggard,
I found my solace and peace within a half-full pitcher of fine beer.

Well, Ron, apparently my "fickleness" hasn't affected my brilliant writing ability, which is a good thing -- just as your political ignorance has not affected your brilliant writing either . In all honesty, I appreciate you coming by to read and I am really glad you enjoyed it. Two poems in the last week, I'm hoping that it will keep flowing and this writer's block I've had this year will slowly fade away. Thank you, my friend. -- j.

Aha, someone sees my overwhelming charm! Life has meaning, yay! Lil, thanks for stopping the argument with that man banging the coconuts together over there (Where did he get them? Coconuts are not indiginous to England!) to come by for a read and your thoughts. I am really glad you enjoyed it. I'm long over-due for going by to check out your newer work, but I'll get to this within the next few days. Always a pleasure to hear from you, my dear beautiful friend. Don't worry, if it was you with the menthol I'd probably make an exception. -- j.

Hello, dear friend, it is good to hear from you. I hope you are doing very groovy. I am glad you enjoyed it, hopefully my muse (I had to get a rental muse as mine ran away with my charm) will stick around for awhile and I can put out some new great work within the next month or so as well. I'm always appreciative of your thoughts. -- j.

They can still smoke in bars where you are ? This is a great write, my short attention span loved this Narrative and craves more. The reference to filter-less cigarettes almost a homage to Vargas and his " painted " ladies. Poems are much cooler with Merle Haggard references in them.

Tennessee State Law on smoking in bars is that as long as the establishment does not allow anyone in that is under the age of 21 then you are allowed to smoke in a bar. It's fortunate that my bar does not allow anyone under the age of 21 mainly for this reason (I think a bar without being able to smoke with your beer is like a man running a marathon with one leg -- it just doesn't make sense). If they ever tried to ban cigarettes from my bar we'd all probably still do it anyway (we're a very 'private' pub). I didn't give alot of thought to Vargas, but I can see the comparison. I also agree about the Merle reference -- isn't life in general better with his music, style, and contribution to society from his greatness? Thanks for coming by and for your thoughts, my friend. -- j.

Hi Hugh, thank you so much for your thoughts and taking the time to read and comment. I think we all have a unique voice and a good story (or fifty if we're poets) to tell the world. I'm glad that you enjoyed this piece. I'm hoping my cheating muse will serve me well for awhile so I can continue to contribute some ditties to the site without having to take such a long period between pieces. Anymore, I do well to write 2-3 pieces in any given month. -- j.

This poem's curves has one having to slow down for the dead man's curves in your brain. Fighting a weak bladder and the allure of a woman smoking a unfiltered Pall Mall even though she preferred a menthol, (plain nasty) all the time questioning your actions, what a ride. Is this poem about weak bladders and fine beer or fighting the demon? BWP... James... It is good to see the master at work...

All the local bars in my neighborhood have basically vanished. Given way to sports bars. And smoking's been banned. Yep, there was nothing like walking by an old style tavern catching the odor of stale smoke and spilled beer. Nowadays there's so many TV's on and airport decibel level music thumping in the background - I feel like I'm autistic. Thanks for the trip to the bar. I can see the lipstick on her cigarette ~

Notice how I can't leave your site: addictive. Not many people have this self deprecating quality: its very appealing: draws me in. BTWThe knights templar did not have regalia: quite simple attire really I think. Are you trying to corner the market for unrequitted love? I have one of those on my site as well. Great write.

You are more than welcome to bring your shampoo and a bag of clothes over here to my site and set up permanent residence with me, I don't mind at all. I do enjoy reading your feedback (after this, I'm going to skip on over to your page and occupy myself for the rest of the afternoon here at work in reading your poems, just stock your page with some Milwaukee's Best for me).
I have always approved of the phrase: "Write what you know." As a native of eastern Tennessee and a "cultured redneck" I know bars very well -- this is why they so often appear in my work (along with drinking beer, smoking, listening to old Outlaw music, the type of thing). Sometimes I intentionally attempt to move into a different type of writing (attempting to step into the shoes of another character) but more often than not I find myself falling back on the things I know from life experiences.
What's wrong with having a healthy self-deprecating quality? I am who I am -- warts and all. I can be an ass sometimes and I sometimes (sometimes) can manage to be a true gentleman. We all have our good and bad inside. The only thing I try to assure myself of is to always be honest to myself and to others around me -- not attempt to put up a facade of being something I'm not.
As far as the Knights Templar -- you're probably right, for some reason I often get them confused with the Teutonic Knights (the white background with red cross). Thanks, again...
