Poems - TOBY
| | TOBYby mercymercy
In his small black and white body
I see a terrier named Penny
Who loved me
For I was her baby
Her bed
The safety of the space
Beneath my crib
In his round little belly
I see an odd Cocker sort named Sam
Who loved me
For I was his playmate
On a sled in the snow
Or in the basket of a blue bike
In his wagging corkscrew tail
I see an eager Beagle named Maggie
Who loved me
For I chose her
A birthday present
From the sands of West Texas
In his bright and trusting eyes
I see an old Beagle named Prince
Who loved me
For we st
ood together
Amid the storm
Of teenage trauma
And repeated relocation
In his simple ways
I see a Schnauzer named Schatzie
Who ate strawberries from the garden
And slept on my pillow
In his quick mind
I see a German Shepherd named Bonnie
Who protected me
From the California drug-using demon
He is a Chinese-Fin
Named Toby
Who loves me
And it is almost as if
The winds blew
The spirits of them all
Into him
This gift I gave myself

What a wonderful reminiscence & tribute to the canines that lived & loved you throughout the years. A beautiful ending:
"And it is almost as if
The winds blew
The spirits of them all
Into him".
Excellent piece of writing. J.

Dear Poet Friend - How kind of you to drop by and review my work. You have so many great writes here and your support is appreciated and respected. Yes, those little dogs have saved my soul over so many years in ways I can't even explain. This is particularly true of late now that my husband is in the midst of a terminal disease and we dont know how we'll manage to pay the property taxes to save our home. If it weren't for faith, friends (including the fur ones), poetry, and hope for a miracle, what would we do? Thank you again.

Joan - Thank you for your kind words and prayers. I honestly appreciate those prayers and know God hears. The more prayers from around the world. God will surely hear. May God bless you, too, and I will keep you in my prayers as well, my gentle-hearted and creative friend.

A beautiful write. It's masterly how you bring it to a conclusion. I am a bit puzzled why you chose to break up the word "Chinese" as you did, but maybe there is a good reason that I have not fathomed.
I'm very sorry to hear about your husband, and my thoughts will be with you hoping that you come through this episode with the courage and wisdom to bear it. May you both be well and happy.

Rory -
Thank you for your comments! And a huge thank you for seeing my typo on the word Chinese! In spite of double-checking myself, I slipped on that one.
Also know I appreciate your kind thoughts and support. Writing poetry has, for so many years, been a wonderful outlet for the sad and happy times of my life. Knowing that there are, literally, positive thoughts and prayers going up for us around the world means everything.
Thank you again, my friend.

Lovely write about dogs, and their universal charateristic of lov e for the master and loyalty. I did have one dog who seemed to combine the spirit of all the the pets I had ever owned and that that the best one ever. Great write about pets.
