Poems - The Day Lydia Died
| | The Day Lydia Diedby wolfinwindow
Lydia was my baby sister.
She was three, I was just fourteen.
Scalding hot, she convulsed.
None of us made a scene.
I gave her mouth to mouth
when she started to turn blue.
The Doctor was on the way.
This story is sadly true.
Dad was drinking and bowling
and no one knew what to do,
She was surely dead ;
the Doctor said so, too.
We wailed and we cried
until Daddy got home
and he told us all to quiet down
and go up to our rooms.
We all got sick,
there were five of us.
Lydia's death we
couldn't discuss.
So it really hurt us
for years and years,
the mention of her name,
often brought tears.
I think it's wrong
to hold in your sorrow,
cry it out and
start a new tomorrow.

I learned the hard way. Now I just bawl my grief out like a baby and get it over. Air hugs accepted and returned.

yes, it was a scary night for us and the first time I'd ever seen dad cry. I remember he couldn't go bowling for years after that because he said every time he threw the ball he saw her face in the pins. Mom finally got him to start again, but it wasn't easy. After that night he would come and check on each of us or make mom check us as we slept. I think that haunted him to his own grave.
