A Modern-Day Paris in Portland, Oregon

by wordsmithwannabe

She appeared out of nowhere,
shimmering next to me on my balcony,
clad in a jet-black leather cat suit
and wicked looking stilettos.

Her fiery eyes fixed themselves upon me,
blood-stained lips curling in a slight smile.
The wind around her swirled faster,
whipping her waist-length striped hair
into a wild inky black and magenta maelstrom.

I knew who she was; we’d met before,
at a little martini bar in the Pearl District.
I glared at the deity named Eris,
daring to stare into eyes that were
slowly narrowing into cat-like slits.

Her lips widened, revealing fangs
that were frighteningly sharp and lethal.
She held out the apple of Discord
in her dainty monstrous fingers;

several lovely deities suddenly appeared,
clamoring for my attention,
each of them desiring the luscious fruit
and its promise to belong "To The Fairest."

Its golden hues bewitched me,
Hera, Aphrodite and Athena,
all whispering in my ear,
tempting me with their various treasures.

“Zeus has decreed that you are to choose,”
Eris growled, with a sly glint in her beasty eyes.
I took the apple, wondering what would happen
if I dared give it to the wrong goddess.

So I cut it up into three equal pieces,
and ate it all with some cheese and a glass of pinot noir…

*For those of you who are unfamiliar with this particular Greek myth, Eris (the goddess of Discord) sparked a dispute between several other goddesses by saying that she would give a golden apple to the fairest among them. The Trojan prince Paris was chosen by Zeus to judge the contest, and he gave the apple to Aphrodite in exchange for the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, thus sparking the Trojan War. Well, that’s it in nutshell anyway…

Daniel, thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my piece. I am a lover of myth and find it fascinating that we still rely on the ancients for inspiration, even in our modern society. The old gods and goddesses are still around, even if we can't see them Wink glad you stopped by and enjoyed my writing, it is much appreciated.
