I can't agree more......I've wondered many times that as I click numbers for poems, and I feel like a bit of a liar and a fraud. Poetry (most art period) for me is binary, I like it or I don't like it with little in-between. Thanks for writing about it.

Thank You electric tiger! I might write another one on this topic, about all the things we use number for, lfor example, time.... If there were no clocks you would never be late, or early, and a wedding would jstart when everyone was there! Undeveloped countries do this, and it is very attractive to me1 (except when I am hungry)

numbers are good for counting down rocket launches, and counting in rock songs 1....2....3...4 - paul.

I can only count by tens. Like 10,20,30,40..... Friendship gets in the way of honest rating or just not wanting to look like a bad person. I give everybody tens and I am honest about it. The only time I don't give ten is in the slams. By the way I am giving you a 10 it is because I count you as a friend and I am not a bad person. BWP... James... Now I think I need to go get my penny jar and learn to count by ones

James, you are a riot! And so true! Sometimes i give people a....NINE!!!I feel uncomfortable giving numerical judgements to art. It seems to obliterate the entire point. Thanks so much for your comment.

I agree, Gail (hence I am commenting but not rating ). I try to give honest ratings but it is difficult. If you give a low rating to some really nice person you feel like a heel. But the whole exercise is rather meaningless. Poets are not racehorses. They deserve to be treated with more respect. Good for you for pointing this out.

Yes, Rory! I have gotten so concerned about ratings that I was pissed that my ranking have lowered due to some people, or one person giving me lower ratings. I realized that I was becoming as concerned with the ratings as with the poetry, and this was a negative thing. I am in the 30/30 challenge, which is officially on facebook by a limited number of people, but I decided to join it here. When you join that kind of a challenge, not all of the poems are great, but it gets you writing, and I have put out some that I am very happy with. I don't know if writing constantly is for me, but this helped my style trememdously. The number system does not. Thanks.

Very good point Gail. I just cannot bring myself to destroy anybody's feelings with the way I feel about their poem. I'm no expert and don't want to be. Besides, we all have different ideas. That's what makes the poetry world go around.

LOL! Wonderful! I start to get very nervous when rating other people's work, or even my own! "What's the difference between an 8 and a 9?" - I ask myself that a million times a minute. But this one gets a 10, no questions about it!
